Climate change, War, Pandemics, Artificial Intelligence, Rights and Responsibilities, Euthanasia are just some of the many challenging concerns we face today. Frequently they feel too overwhelming for a mere individual to respond to.
This is where philosophy can help. It provides the tools to closely read about issues in depth and critically. It may not arrive at a ‘truth’ but helps us unpack complex problems and raise our awareness of the arguments for and against.
We are about to embark on the fourth year of our group. In previous years we have covered topics such as euthanasia, the mind body split, immigration, public health, how we know what we know, bioethics, how to live a ‘good' life, vegetarianism and what makes art beautiful. Hitherto we have done this by all reading a contemporary philosophical journal article, chosen by the Chair/Lead for that session. Recently we have changed the focus slightly to allow us to concentrate on one philosopher or philosophical school, or one topic in more depth. Members are encouraged to prepare and contribute to the discussion through reading suggested material and/or listening to videos online. We take it in turns to lead sessions, but new members are not expected to do so until they feel comfortable.
We are a happy collaborative group where members respect each other’s different perspectives.
