Over the past six years, during Ruth Eagle's Lead as coordinator of the then Tree Lovers' Group, we have planted hundreds of trees at some varied sites around this area. Of particular note was assistance given to the Halmer End Commemoration Committee with planting 156 trees in memory of all those men and boys who were killed in the Minnie Pit Disaster of 1918. Other plantings include some Spindle and Guelder Rose trees we started with in the grounds of Madeley Centre in 2019 and various trees at Furnace Lane Allotments.
Several other plantings took place each year on private land but it is now quite difficult to find more such sites. Most recently, with Council permission, we planted along the edge of the field at Arbour Close and in the stretch opposite the Old Hall at Poolside. We hope people will be able to appreciate our trees and daffodils there for many years to come. We plan to hold a couple of meetings in September and October before Ruth steps down as co-ordinator. If anyone would like to join in or step up to lead so that the group can continue, please contact Ruth
GREAT NEWS!!
At the last official meeting of the Trees group in September '25 we agreed to morph the group into the Natural History Group.
Hilary Hurd has kindly agreed to be coordinator for the time being. We intend to meet on the second Tuesday at 10am, the same slot as the trees group and are thinking about a programme for November. December and January to get the group started.
